SOTD: Don’t Get Me Wrong

2008 April 19

Ever get a song in your head and know that it’s from a movie, but you can’t seem to recall what the movie is? Well, that happens to me way too often, and today it was “Don’t Get Me Wrong” by The Pretenders (from Romy and Michelle’s High School Reunion..shh, don’t make fun of me!). Anyway, this song is pretty darn catchy, so you all should check it out. (And if you ever have that problem of not knowing the movie that a song is from, try IMDB.)

SOTD: Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want

2008 April 18

In honor of today being my younger sister’s first prom, I decided to pick a song from the awful prom scene from the even more awful movie Never Been Kissed. (But, shh, I secretly love it!) The song just happens to be my favorite Smiths song in the world, “Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want.” Morrissey’s vocals are so amazing and the song is actually fitting for this clip:

Enjoy! (And please support this artist!)

I don’t have much to say here (hmm…get it?), but I’ve been asked by my esteemed co-author/girlfriend to post some mp3s from a CD I recently received as an early birthday present from my esteemed co-author/girlfriend, Colin Meloy (of The Decemberists)’s solo album “Colin Meloy Sings Live!”.

Just for funsies, here is Meloy’s self-admitted “worst song he ever wrote”, Dracula’s Daughter.

And here is an actually good song, which just so happens to be where I got the title of this post from.
Here’s Meloy singing “The Engine Driver”.

Free iPods, enjoy.

SOTD: Flower

Hey, folks! Hope you all have been having a great Tax Day thus far.

Today’s song of the day is “Flower” by eels. It’s my favorite track off of Mark Oliver Everett’s debut album Beautiful Freak (1996). The man is a freaking genius when it comes to all aspects of music. He writes better than most (although, he does have an odd song every now and then) and his voice is completely amazing. It’s sad but soothing all at the same time. Mark (or “E” as he’s generally called) has been through more things in his life than you’d imagine (trust me.. or this I guess), and it definitely translates through songs. If you have ever heard a track by him, you’ll understand.

Flower:

Turn the ugly light off, God
Wanna feel the night
Every day it shines down on me
Don’t you think that I see
Don’t you think that I see
What it’s all about

Hard to look the other way
While the world passes me by
And everyone is trying to bum me out

It’s a pretty big world, God
And I am awful small
Every day it rains down on me
Flower in a hailstorm
Flower in a hailstorm
Livin’ for the drought

I could throw it back again
But then I’d play their game
Everyone is trying to bum me out

When I came into this world they slapped me
And every day since then I’m slapped again
Tomorrow’s king, an unsightly coward
You see, I know I’m going to win

Turn the ugly light off, God
Don’t wanna see my face
Every day it will betray me
Don’t you think that I know
Don’t you think that I know
What they’re talking about

If they step on me tonight
they’re gonna pay someday
Everyone is trying to bum me out

Mmmmmmmm
Mmmmmmmmmmm

Flower- Eels

Enjoy! And buy his music!!!

A thanks of sorts, and a request

Howdy, beloved reader(s?).

It’s been a busy week here at the NMTS offices, so we haven’t been able to post much.
My apologies.

In order to make up for this, I will post something for you…RIGHT NOW!

Aaaaand done.

Don’t worry, I’m just punking you, Natalie. That’s what friends do.

I was looking at the download count things on the songs I posted in my last (real) post, and noticed that Brand New’s “Moshi Moshi” was clocking in at a number much higher than our blog stats page would reflect, so I decided to post something else in the same vein.
Jesse Lacey – Moshi Moshi (live)
Fun fact, Jesse played this song because his mom had been “begging him to play it”, according to Jesse on the little witty banter MP3 that precedes it in my iTunes (which I have not included. HA HA)
Moshi Moshi is a pretty interesting song, as far as I’m concerned. It’s got some of the worst lyrics Jesse has ever written (outside of Magazines):

I think I’m crazy, baby
Let you off the hook too easy
If you were a telephone,

You’d still be off the hook.
Seriously, Jesse? Come on.  Moshi Moshi also happens to have one of my favorite Brand New choruses (which, again bears a similarity to Magazines, which has one of my favorite “emo” lines ever* despite otherwise stupid lyrics). Anyway, here’s the chorus:

Are you thinking of me?
When you’re putting on your makeup, darling
And dyeing your hair like you do?
Well, you’re wasting your time
If you’re trying to impress me
I waste all my time just thinking of you.

For this chorus alone, I almost wish this wasn’t a b-side. The way Jesse sings it is borderline anthem-like, and I think it would be really cool to hear a ton of BN fans belting it out at a concert.

So yeah, I’ve just nerded out a bit here. Continuing on, you’ll notice in the title I mention “a request”.
Here’s my request:
If you are actually reading this, and not just stumbling on this page because you googled Vampire Weekend, would it kill ya to leave a comment or something?
I mean really, COME ON.

Sorry, sorry…What I’m trying to say is: “leave us some love in the comments section, peeps.”
Bonus points if you point out the two times I quoted TV shows…

Till next time,
-Mr. Sam

*That’s an idea for a blog…really emo lines…hmm…

So it seems as though a large number of the traffic on this blog has been for those of you searching for information on Vampire Weekend. So, what better way to reward you than by choosing them as today’s SOTD?

I picked A-Punk for the day, because it’s probably one of their best known songs. Besides that…it’s kick ass. So, for those of you who are unfamiliar with it, take a listen. You’ll like it; I promise! (And, yes, I say that a lot, but these guys are really good! See: SOTD: M79 post.)

Look outside at the raincoats coming, say “oh”
‘Ey, ‘ey, ‘ey, ‘ey!

SOTD: Heavy Metal Drummer

2008 April 7

In honor of the freshly posted Lollapalooza lineup, I have chosen a SOTD by Wilco, one of the festival’s headlining bands and arguably one of the best bands of our generation. (And, yes, I may have just said that to spite Mr. Sam.)

The following video (done by Brendan Leonard) uses this amazing song:

Hello, folks. I’ve got a short one for you today. I just thought I’d give you, my adoring fans, a little gift in honor of the announcement of the official Lollapalooza lineup.
Which is to say, TONS of bands I could care less about, and two bands that I am SUPER DUPER EXCITED about.
And it’s not just any two bands, it just so happens to be two of my favorite bands EVAR. Manchester Orchestra and Brand New.

So, as I said, in honor of this I’m gonna post a few gems:

Manchester Orchestra: La Di Da

Manchester Orchestra (ft. Jesse Lacey): Where Have You Been (live)

Brand New: Moshi Moshi

Brand New: Flying At Tree Level (version 1.0)

SOTD: Where Have All the Rude Boys Gone?

2008 April 5

Here it is folks, the song that made me fall in love with Ted Leo and his talented Pharmacists way back in 2003. That’s all I need to say about that!
